Albania had signed an agreement with the European Union (EU) and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) to receive a 136-million-euro grant, BalkanEngineer.com learned from SEENews.com. The funds are aimed at financing the reconstruction of a railway line connecting the central part of the country with the border with Montenegro.
The grant will be provided through the Western Balkans Investment Framework (WBIF), being the largest ever granted by the European Union to Albania. The reconstruction will include the electrification of more than 120 km of railway tracks and the renovation of 12 stations, as well as installation of new signaling systems. The implementation of the project will allow faster travel at speeds of up to 100 km/h.
The railway is part of the Mediterranean Corridor of EU’s Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T) and is Albania’s only international rail link with the neighboring and EU countries, connecting the capitals Tirana and Podgorica.
