Romania intends to restart the operations of the Otelu Rosu steel plant, located in the western county of Caras Severin, which has been idle since 2013, thanks to a significant investment from the UMB Group. This was learned by BalkanEnigneer.com from gmk.center.com. The commissioning of the plant will also create more than 600 jobs.
The Otelu Rosu steel mill, equipped with a 100-ton electric arc furnace, last upgraded in 2011, has changed ownership several times. In early 2024, UMB Group purchased the plant for the sum of 12 million euros, with plans to produce metal structures for the company's construction projects.
The company, led by Romanian businessman Dorinel Umbrarescu, will provide more than 300 million euros to restart the facility, with the aim of strengthening local infrastructure and creating jobs.
Specializing in low-, medium-, high-carbon and high-alloy billets, the design capacity of the Otelu Rosu plant is 850,000 t of steel per year. These blanks can be in the form of rebar, wire or other special products essential for various construction needs.
