The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) supports North Macedonia in the modernization and expansion of the solid waste management system. This is what BalkanEngnineer.com learned from Denar.mk.
The bank is providing a €55 million government loan that will finance the construction of two new regional landfills, the rehabilitation of an existing landfill, as well as new solid waste transfer stations with appropriate collection and transport infrastructure and a recycling center. Two illegal dumps will be closed. The project will be implemented by the Ministry of the Environment and the Organization of the Territory of North Macedonia.
This investment envisages the creation of three regional integrated waste management systems according to European Union (EU) standards in five regions (Polog, Southwest, Pelagonia, Vardar and Southeast), which will ensure the collection and transportation of waste for more than one million citizens . As a result of the project, the practice of storing municipal solid waste in illegal landfills will be eradicated and a new system of work, safe for the environment and meeting EU standards, will be introduced.
