Strumica in North Macedonia is going to be the first Balkan city with fully electric public bus transport in line with the European Green Deal, BalkanEngineer.com learned from New.mia.mk. During a ceremony in the capital Skopje, the mayor of Strumica Kostadin Kostadinov received the keys of ten electric buses.
After passing through customs inspection and being registered and insured, the electric buses are expected to be transported to Strumica. There will also be a one-month test drive period starting on 11th September, during which the passengers will not pay for bus fares.
The introduction of the new electric buses will help the city cope with serious challenges, such as lack of public transport, as well as air pollution. The implementation of the eco project is also part of the municipality’s concept of turning Strumica into a smart city, along with the construction of bicycle lanes in the city center.
