Albania's state railway operator has launched a tender for the construction of eight new stations along the 34-kilometer railway line connecting the capital Tirana with the port city of Durrës, BalkanEngineer.com has learned from Gmk.center.en. The investment is part of a larger project to restore the currently inactive railway line along its existing route with a budget of €92.1 million. The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) has announced that bids can be submitted through its procurement portal until July 9.
The railway infrastructure reconstruction project was financed by the EBRD, which provided a loan of 36.9 million euros, and the European Union, which contributed an investment grant of up to 35.5 million euros. As of now, 70% of the work on the project has already been completed and the railway is expected to become operational by March 2025.
The EBRD is a major player in improving rail infrastructure in the region, investing over €1 billion in various rail projects, many of which are co-financed with significant EU grants. In addition to the Tirana - Durrës line, efforts are being made to restore railways in Kosovo, North Macedonia and Serbia.
