Albania is planning significant investments in the energy sector with the aim of becoming a regional energy leader and net exporter of electricity by 2030, BalkanEngineer.com has learned from Balkangreenenergynews.com.
To meet its ambitious goals, Albania plans to start construction of the Skavica Hydroelectric Plant in November 2023. The project is worth around €500 million and is expected to be completed in five years. The expected output of the "Skavitsa" HPP is equivalent to 20% of the current domestic electricity production.
Currently, the country is almost 100% dependent on hydroelectric power plants, as there are no wind farms yet, and the penetration of solar energy is relatively slow.
On the other hand, private companies are increasingly eager to build power plants without government aid. For this reason, Albania is holding its first tender for the construction of wind power plants, with one or more of the applicants to contract for facilities with a total capacity of 200 MW. By the end of the year, an auction for solar energy is also planned, also for 200 MW.
