Technology leader in electrification and automation ABB will carry out a comprehensive project to upgrade and improve the energy efficiency and reliability of 19 locomotives operated by Romania's state-owned passenger railway company CFR Călători, BalkanEngineer.com has learned from Railway-news.com.
As part of the retrofit project, ABB will supply a complete traction circuit, including new transformers, converters and electric motors to allow the locomotives to reach a top speed of 160 km/h - marking a significant increase from the current 120 km/h. The project will be carried out in collaboration with Reloc, a local contractor specialising in overhauling and upgrading locomotives in Romania.
The 5,100 kW locomotives slated for retrofit are an integral part of CFR Călători's operations, and the project is in line with Romania's National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR), supported by the European Union. The ambitious goal is to upgrade Romanian locomotives to meet European standards for energy efficiency and reliability.
