A program of the Albanian government with the support of the World Bank aims to improve the infrastructure of 30 bridges that show the most urgent needs. The project is expected to start with a bridge in the Girokastra district, one of the areas with the biggest problems in this sector, BalkanEngineer.com learned from Acp.al.
In Albania, a large number of bridges in the national road network are in need of repair not only because of their age, but also because of erosion. In this regard, the Albanian government, with the support of the World Bank, will launch a program that foresees financing with about 55 million dollars for the first 30 bridges that are in immediate need. According to the World Bank, about 800,000 residents in the country directly benefit from the program.
One of the first bridges to be included in this project is the Viroi Bridge, located at the entrance to the town of Girokastra, with work expected to begin this year.
The national road network of about 4,000 km in Albania includes 803 bridges and other related structures, some of which have not yet been fully inventoried. The construction of some of them dates back to 1930, and over the years different construction standards have been observed, which, however, are gradually brought into line with European ones.
