Industrial automation is entering a new stage, where compact controllers are meant to perform functions, traditionally reserved for systems of the highest class. With the introduction of SIMATIC S7-1200 G2, Siemens and their partner Filkab offer a platform, which integrates an improved Motion Control and cybersecurity hardware module. "The S7-1200 G2 is designed to fill the gap between basic logic and high-performance machines, providing engineers with computing power that will soon require significantly more expensive hardware resources," Filkab commented to BalkanEngineer.com.

The second generation SIMATIC S7-1200 is designed on a completely revised calculation platform, which addresses the main limitations of compact controllers till now – the lack of resources for complex movement control. Siemens integrates a new type of processing unit, which allows G2 to quickly handle data, close to S7-1500 speeds. This enables precise synchronization of multi-axis systems directly through the CPU module, without the need for specialized Motion Control hardware.
The hardware change is compatible with an increased memory, which is especially important regarding data libraries. Unlike “standard” updates, the architecture is designed to support parallel execution of the logic program and heavy communication protocols without introducing jitter. This stability is important for applications in the food industry and packaging machines, where response times are measured in milliseconds.
"SIMATIC S7-1200 G2 is a new technological milestone for industrial automation. The controller is designed to be the backbone of the modern digital enterprise, combining high performance with uncompromising cybersecurity," Filkab commented.
