Why charging stations are increasingly resembling data centers – a commentary by the engineering firm T&D Engineering

Beginning in 2010, electric vehicles have continued growing in popularity on a global scale, and public focus has been almost entirely on the vehicles themselves. Early on, charging stations were outside of the focus of analysts. They have been viewed as a simple and passive infrastructure, whose only function was to charge the vehicles. Today however, these stations are a more complex software ecosystem than “simply a charger”, and engineers look at them in a completely different way.

"Dozens of electronic components, communication modules, and software algorithms operate within the housing of a modern charging station, enabling data collection, processing, and information exchange. In many respects, the architecture of modern charging solutions is beginning to resemble that of industrial hubs; reliability, connectivity, and real-time management are key factors for efficient operation," state representatives from T&D Engineering — one of the leading companies actively developing such concepts—speaking to BalkanEngineer.com.
In the product portfolio of the establishment, there are AC charging stations series eCS WCM and eCS ACM, as well as powerful DC solutions, among them being eCS WPC-250, power cabinets like eCS PC and front-end modules like eCS DCB. Regardless of the different applications, all these products are designed as part of the whole digital ecosystem, which allows for centralized control, distance monitoring and integration of outside platforms. "Charging infrastructure is increasingly evolving towards connected systems. Users and operators expect constant access to information, remote control capabilities, and the ability to respond quickly when needed," added T&D Engineering. For smaller scale, these functions are often unnoticed by the end user. For charging park operators, however, access to real-time data is a key tool for managing the infrastructure.
