29 january 2025

Albania, Italy and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have signed a strategic alliance to build a submarine power pipeline that will link Albania and Italy, BalkanEngineer.com has learned from a statement by Italian Prime Minister Georgia Meloni. The Italian government announced the agreement as a key milestone for the development of energy infrastructure in the region.

The project includes the construction of a power pipeline and large-scale investments in renewable energy on Albanian territory. The development of solar and wind farms as well as hybrid systems with energy storage are planned. A significant part of the electricity produced will be exported to Italy, improving energy connectivity in the Mediterranean.

The agreed value of the project is estimated at around €1 billion. According to the UAE Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology, Dr Sultan Al Jaber, this partnership combines the UAE's expertise in renewables, Albania's natural resources and Italy's energy market. He said the cooperation will create new opportunities for sustainable development in the region.

The project is part of a wider agreement between Albania's state-owned energy company KESH and the UAE's Masdar company. Their framework deal, signed in November 2024, provides for multiple joint investments in renewable energy projects.
