The Turkish company Fortis Energy is preparing to build one of the largest solar power plants in Serbia, which will be located on 300 ha of land in the Sremska Mitrovica area, near the village of Drenovac. The project has a planned installed capacity of 270 MW – approximately one-fifth of the production of the Đerdap hydroelectric power plant, BalkanEngineer.com learned from a publication on serbia-business.eu.

The company has already obtained a building permit, and a permit to connect to the power grid is expected to be issued in the next three months.

At the same time, Fortis Energy is launching a project to build an additional 180 MW photovoltaic power plant, combined with a 36 MW energy storage system. This innovation will place Serbia among the leading countries in the region in terms of the implementation of battery technologies for balancing the electricity system. According to energy experts, such projects will be the basis for faster integration of renewable sources and stabilization of the grid.

The investment is also of strategic importance for the decarbonisation process and the implementation of European climate targets. In addition to the environmental benefits, local authorities point out that the project will stimulate the economic development of the region, with new jobs expected to be created in the construction and future operation of the facility.
