The Polytechnic University of Timișoara (UPT) has announced the launch of a new, high-tech master’s program dedicated entirely to the engineering of unmanned aerial systems (drones). The initiative is the first of its kind in Romania and aims to train specialists for one of the fastest-growing technology sectors in the world, BalkanEngineer.com learned from Romania-Insider.com.

The program will focus on the design, construction, software development, and operation of drones, covering applications in fields such as agriculture, surveying, logistics, emergency response, and national security. Students will have access to specialized laboratories and will work in close collaboration with industry partners from the aviation and IT sectors in the Banat region, which is already establishing itself as a technology hub.
The university’s rector emphasized that the new major is a direct response to the needs of the labor market, where demand for experts in unmanned systems is growing exponentially. The program will also include modules on the regulatory framework and ethics in the use of autonomous systems, preparing future engineers for the complex challenges of the modern economy. The first cohort is expected to begin their studies in the 2026/2027 academic year.
