The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) has granted a 30 million euro loan to NLB Banka Skopje—the first financing of its kind in North Macedonia under the new Western Balkans Green Results-Based Debt Financing Framework (WB GOLD). The project aims to accelerate the transition to a sustainable economy by providing small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) with access to capital for green investments, BalkanEngineer.com learned from the EBRD’s official announcement.

A distinctive feature of the WB GOLD mechanism is its innovative nature—financial incentives are directly linked to specific results achieved in “green” lending. The funds will be channeled by NLB Bank to local companies for projects involving the installation of energy-efficient equipment, the construction of renewable energy systems, and resource optimization. This will help businesses reduce their carbon footprint and enhance their competitiveness in international markets.
The agreement was officially signed by Fatih Turkmenoglu, EBRD Country Manager for North Macedonia, and Toni Stojanovski, CEO of NLB Bank Skopje. The investment is part of the EBRD’s broader strategy in the region, aimed at strengthening the private sector and building a more resilient economic infrastructure through close cooperation with leading local financial institutions.
