Telecom leaders Telecom Egypt and 4iG have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to lay a high capacity submarine cable between Egypt and Albania. BalkanEngineer.com has learned this from 4iG's website. The agreement allows 4iG Group to enter as a new player in the market for intercontinental data transmission infrastructure between Europe and Asia and Europe and East Africa.

Telecom Egypt is the first integrated telecommunications operator in Egypt and one of the largest submarine cable operators in the region, and 4iG Plc is a Budapest-based information and communications company. The telecoms industry representatives signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to connect Egypt and Albania through a high-capacity point-to-point submarine cable.
With an open-access model and multiple branching segments, the system is envisioned to be the new European cable entry point with a different transit route compared to the already existing Mediterranean routes to the main internet point of presence (PoP), such as those in Frankfurt, and to multiple potential points of presence in Eastern Europe.
Both companies are looking to gain a significant share of the huge and rapidly growing market for data traffic between Europe and Asia and also between Europe and East Africa. The agreement was signed in Cairo by the CEO of Telecom Egypt and the Chairman of the Board of 4iG Plc.
Albania is privileged with its strategic location as one of the important gateways and entry points to Eastern Europe, having a secure cross-border terrestrial infrastructure. Its location will facilitate further connectivity and access to various key destinations.
