The Romanian state-owned company Hidroelectrica plans to build a green hydrogen plant with 50 MW power on the Ostrovu Mare island on the Danube river. Along with the facility, a photovoltaic park with batteries for energy storage is planned as well, BalkanEngineer also learned from Romania-insider.com.

The company, which is the largest producer of electricity in Romania, is looking for a consultant to prepare the feasibility study and all the necessary documentation. The investment will include the construction of a 50-MW hydrolyzer using the Danube water and the renewable energy generated by the photovoltaic park as resources. The facility will be located near the hydroelectric power plant and navigation system “Iron Gates II”.

Hidroelectrica plans to start producing green hydrogen with ultra-high purity in 2026. The process is expected to be 75% efficient with an annual production capacity of at least 7500 t.
