Romania to buy 12 hydrogen trains as a part pilot project to “green” railway

The Ministry of Transport in Romania has approved the purchase of 12 hydrogen trains as a part a test project to “green” trains, Balkanengineer.com learned from Romaniajournal.ro. The routes of trains will be Bucharest – Otopeni Airport and Bucharest – Pitesti. The total estimated costs of the project amount to 973 million euro.

 

 

The pilot project aim to purchase 12 600-seater locomotive, as well as long-term vehicle maintenance and repair services and hydrogen supply.

 

The investment “on the use of locomotives in electric traction based on hydrogen fuel cells, within the obligation of public passenger transport service on non-electrified railway lines”, will serve through high frequency services routes north of Bucharest and Ilfov country, by connection with neighboring countries of Arges, Dambovita and Giurgiu.

 

The passengers will be able to board on the train with their bicycles, as well as will enable easy access for people with disabilities.
