Romania's main international airport - Henri Quanda near Bucharest - will be expanded with a completely new passenger terminal, BalkanEngineer.com has learned from a statement by the Bucharest National Airports Company (CNAB). The company has launched a tender for the selection of a contractor to design the complex and adjacent airport infrastructure. The value of the design and engineering contract is estimated at around EUR 40 million.

The new terminal will cover an area of approximately 176,000 m2 and is expected to be able to handle up to 30 million passengers per year by 2040, including 6,500 passengers at peak times. The facility will be designed to meet the highest international standards for both Schengen and non-Schengen traffic. It is planned to have spacious and clearly demarcated areas for arrivals, departures and transit passengers, and the design provides for a flexible, modular structure that allows for phased commissioning.
According to information released by CNAB, the project includes the construction of a minimum of 48 new aircraft parking positions and 20 boarding gates. State-of-the-art baggage handling, security control and passenger information services will be implemented. The facility will be integrated with completely new airport infrastructure - taxiways, control tower, fire stations, administrative buildings, waste water treatment plants, handling areas, ground handling depot and transformer substations.
There will also be modern transport links within the new terminal - including new taxi and public transport stops, dedicated bus areas and car parks.
According to official documentation released by CNAB, the project has been described as the largest and most complex airport venture in the country's history. In addition to the passenger infrastructure, the next phases include the construction of a multimodal cargo platform and a high-tech industrial park that will support air transport activities.
The deadline for submitting bids for the tender is 16 June 2025 and construction work is expected to begin within the framework of the strategic development programme for Henri Quanda Airport set by CNAB as early as 2022.
