The Albanian government has given official approval for the construction of two large-scale photovoltaic (PV) projects in the southwest of the country. The new solar farms will be located near the city of Fier and will have a total installed capacity of 107 MW, BalkanEngineer.com has learned from a government announcement.

The projects are part of Albania's long-term strategy to promote investment in renewable energy and sustainable development, and are expected to significantly increase the country's solar power generation capacity, where until recently hydro plants dominated the energy mix.
The larger of the two new solar projects, with a capacity of 82 MW, will be developed by Albania Solar Power, a company established in 2024 by entrepreneur Angel Agaliou. The second project, with a capacity of 25 MW, will be implemented by Power Energy, founded a year earlier, in 2023, by businessman Leonard Castrati. Both companies are local investors, underlining the growing role of the Albanian private sector in the transition to a green economy.
According to the information provided, the construction of the two PV parks should be completed within three years from the start of activities. The sites will then be operational for 46 years, implying long-term operation and a sustainable contribution to the Albanian electricity system.
The installations will be equipped with modern photovoltaic technology that meets modern efficiency and environmental compatibility requirements. The projected annual output is expected to contribute to the stability of the country's energy supply and support the implementation of its commitments under the EU Green Deal and regional energy integration.
The government further indicated that this investment represents an important step in Albania's efforts to reduce its dependence on hydroelectricity, which is vulnerable to seasonal fluctuations, and to expand the share of solar energy in the overall electricity mix. The news comes at a time when interest in solar energy is growing in the Balkans and countries such as North Macedonia, Serbia and Bulgaria are also increasing investment in the sector.
