During a meeting on innovation and start-up ecosystems on the Western Balkans, The Bulgarian Commissioner Maria Gabriel called on deepening the partnerships in the region. Funding and support tools for such initiatives will be provided by the new EU Horizon Europe program, BalkanEngineer.com learned from Economic.bg.

With a proposed budget of EUR 100 billion, Horizon Europe will be the most ambitious research and innovation program in the European Union. According to Maria Gabriel, the Balkans will need successful innovations that are a combination of technological developments with business and financial models. This would have a profound positive impact on the society and the economy in the region.

The Horizon Europe initiative will focus on the creation of innovation and research on cancer, climate change, smart cities, food and water. The program will provide direct support through two major funding tools – Pathfinder for the start-up phase, and Accelerator for market development and deployment.
