Bulgaria has launched a large-scale procedure to build digital infrastructure, BalkanEngineer.com has learned from a press release by the country's Ministry of Transport and Communications. The project is worth BGN 468.8 million and is funded by the National Recovery and Sustainability Plan. It aims to bridge the digital divide by creating high-capacity networks in sparsely populated and remote areas where there is a lack of interest from private telecommunications companies.

The initiative will provide high-speed internet to over 350.000 people, extending fibre connectivity to 140 municipalities. No fewer than 700 base stations will be built and connected to new networks. The funds will be allocated by region, including BGN 84.84 million for the North West region, BGN 61.08 million for the North Central region and BGN 89.64 million for the South West region.
Companies wishing to participate must provide at least 10% of their own funding and submit project proposals within 90 days. The initiative will also upgrade the state communications network, which currently covers 7.500 km and provides connectivity for over 1.200 public institutions.
