Burgas Airport's runway will be fully rehabilitated in the winter of 2025/26, concessionaire Fraport Twin Star Airport Management has announced. The project, which involves an investment of more than €50 million, aims to modernise the facility, which was built in 1962.
The airport will be temporarily closed for six months, from November 2025 to April 2026, to carry out the renovation work, with the aim of minimising the impact on the tourist season. According to the concessionaire, the upgrade is necessary for safety and in preparation for the expected increase in traffic over the next two decades. The rehabilitation will incorporate modern technology and materials that will provide greater durability and efficiency to the runway.
As part of the preparation for the upcoming renovation, maintenance work will be performed on the runway within three weeks in March 2025. This period has been chosen due to the relatively low traffic before the start of the busy summer season.
The modernisation is a key step for the development of the airport and ensuring flight safety. Upon completion of the renovation, the runway will be able to accommodate significantly increased traffic and meet the future needs of the aviation industry in Bulgaria.
