Bulgaria has taken an important step towards the modernisation of its logistics infrastructure with the launch of the first private intermodal terminal in the country. The new facility will be located in the village of Voluyak, about 15 km west of Sofia's city centre, and will be operated by Bulgarian transport and logistics company Transexpress, BalkanEngineer.com has learned from an official company announcement.

The project is worth a total of 8.59 million euro and is co-financed by the European Union through the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF). Construction is expected to be completed by the end of May 2025 and the facility will be fully operational in the second half of that year.
The terminal is part of the Sofia-West Multimodal Logistics Platform project and will offer the possibility to transfer freight between rail and road without the need to separate train sets. The facility will have the capacity to handle trains up to 740 m in length - a standard that meets the requirements of the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T) core.
The intermodal terminal will handle freight in two main directions: north-south and east-west. With direct access to international corridors - including the Orient/East-Mediterranean (OEM) corridor and Rail Freight Corridor 7 (RFC 7) - the terminal will facilitate transit between Central and South-Eastern Europe as well as between the Black Sea and Adriatic regions.
