Four Balkan capitals competing for Green Capital 2023

Sofia, Belgrade, Skopje and Zagreb are among the participants in the European Green Capital Award 2023 (EGCA), organized by the European Commission, BalkanEngineer.com learned from BalkanGreenEnergyNews.com.

 


The capitals of Bulgaria, Serbia, North Macedonia and Croatia will compete for the award, along with Izmir and Gaziantep (Turkey), Cagliari (Italy), Dublin (Ireland), Gdansk, Krakow, Rzeszow and Warsaw (Poland), Helsingborg (Sweden), Košice (Slovakia), Logroño (Spain) and Tallinn (Estonia).


The award, worth a total of EUR 1 million, aims to support the environmental performance of the cities and their drive for urban sustainability and eco-innovation. According to the European Commission, the award has many other benefits, including more active coverage in international media, increased pride on local level, a greater focus on environmental projects, and more foreign investments.


A group of twelve independent experts is currently conducting a technical evaluation of each finalist`s application. The assessment is based on 12 environmental indicators.


The finalists in the competition will present an action plan on how their city intends to celebrate their European Year of the Green Capital.
