The Albanian government has officially approved the construction and operation of two new solar power plants with a total capacity of 152 MW. The projects will be implemented by local companies and represent another step toward diversifying the country’s energy mix, which has traditionally relied heavily on hydropower, BalkanEngineer.com learned from the specialized publication SeeNews.

The first project involves the construction of a 100 MW solar park in the Fier area, while the second project is for a 52 MW facility in the Elbasan region. Both facilities will operate without state subsidies or feed-in tariffs, underscoring the growing competitiveness of private investment in Albania’s renewable energy sector. The approved companies are committed to completing construction within the next three years.

This initiative is part of Tirana’s broader strategy to achieve energy independence and reduce vulnerability during periods of drought. As of March 2026, solar energy already accounts for nearly 10% of the country’s domestic production. The government plans to launch a new renewable energy tender in the third quarter of 2026, aimed at strengthening the power transmission grid and international interconnections.
