ABB strengthens its leadership role in sustainable water management and climate change for another year

The global water and energy industry is in a state of deep transformation, pushed by a growing lack of resources, increase in industrial usage and stricter regulation requirements. In this context the technological leader ABB demonstrates a reliable approach to managing water and the changes in climate, by achieving key international recognition for its efforts. During 2025, the company was added to the A list of the CDP for water for the first time, a recognition that is a significant step towards transparency and ethical usage of water resources. At the same time, ABB remains in the A list for climate changes for the third consecutive year, as part of the 1% of 22,100 reviewed companies, who had achieved A rating.

The ABB site at Nelamangala, India was recognized for its golden certificate by the Alliance for Water Stewardship (AWS) standards, becoming the first factory of the company to gain such renown. The region around Bengaluru is faced with a serious lack of groundwater due to urbanization and intensive mining.
The factory undertook complex measures for sustainable management of water, including the recycling of 85% of the purified water and collecting rainwater, which speeds up the recovery of groundwater around 1.25 times faster than its usage. Over the past three years, these actions have led to a rise in local groundwater levels by over 30 m.
“The focus on sustainable water management and engagement with local communities is part of ABB’s corporate strategy for responsible resource use,” the company said. ABB conducts annual water risk assessments at all 320 of its sites worldwide, with a focus on 91 sites in water-scarce regions. By the end of 2026, all of these sites will conduct a self-assessment of water management, followed by interventions to reduce water scarcity.
The company is gradually raising its water security rating – from B in 2023, to A in 2024 and A in 2025. This progress reflects targeted efforts to implement industry standards for safe and high-quality water production, distribution and treatment.
