The Strumyani-Berovo border crossing, which will connect Bulgaria and North Macedonia, received the green light for implementation, BalkanEngineer.com learned from Money.bg. The investment worth more than 11 million euros represents the largest project under the cross-border cooperation programs managed by the Ministry of Regional Development and Public Works (MRRD).

Several buildings will be built on Bulgarian territory and the road leading to the point will be completed. On the other side of the border, in North Macedonia, existing structures and facilities will be modernized. The main priority in construction activities will be the installation of renewable energy sources (RES) and the use of energy-efficient materials.

The project is divided into two phases. The first phase, which is expected to be completed in 2026, includes preparatory activities related to planning, design and selection of contractors. The second phase, which should be implemented from 2027 to 2029, covers construction activities on the infrastructure of the border complex.

After the commissioning of the new border crossing, the number of people crossing the border between Bulgaria and North Macedonia is expected to increase from 657,000 to 722,700 people per year.

According to representatives of MRRD, the investment is fully funded - both European and national, and the project aims to improve connectivity between the two countries and stimulate economic development in the region.
