Serbia has taken another step towards upgrading the capital's transport infrastructure, signing a €720 million contract with Chinese company PowerChina, BalkanEngineer.com has learned from SeeNews.com. The agreement covers the design and construction of Stage 2 of the first phase of Belgrade Metro Line 1, as well as the purchase of specialized tunneling machines.

The first phase of the metro is divided into three stages, with the contract for Stage 1, valued at 2.4 billion dinars (about 20.5 million euros), signed in August. Meanwhile, PowerChina and France's Alstom are partnering on the project, with the Chinese company responsible for construction and Alstom for the supply and installation of transport systems, including trains, rails and signalling technology.
According to the preliminary design, the Belgrade metro network will include two lines of 21 km and 24 km, while a future third line is already in the planning process. A tender was launched in August to prepare the documentation for it. The overall project is important for expanding the Serbian capital's transport options and for providing modern and efficient mobility for Belgrade's residents and visitors.
