Serbia has officially added hydrogen as a key energy source in its Energy Development Strategy through 2040 and is currently actively developing a comprehensive program for its implementation. Minister of Mining and Energy Dubravka Jedović Handanović announced that the country sees the primary application of green hydrogen in the industrial and transport sectors, BalkanEngineer.com learned from the specialized publication eKapija.

During the international conference “Green Hydrogen as a Roadmap for Energy Transition,” the minister emphasized that Serbia is counting on the support of the European Union to establish the necessary legislative framework. A draft “Strategy for the Development of Green Hydrogen and the Removal of Regulatory Barriers” has already been approved, aiming to establish modern standards for production, transport, and storage that are fully aligned with European regulations.

In parallel with regulatory efforts, the country is also launching practical projects. With EU support, a demonstration facility for hydrogen production and storage is being developed at the Vinča Institute of Nuclear Sciences. The project aims to establish best practices for integrating hydrogen into the electricity system, particularly as a tool for balancing production from variable renewable energy sources (VRE).
