Schott Pharma opened a state-of-the-art injectable ampoule plant in Jagodina, Serbia

02 may 2025

German company Schott Pharma, which specialises in packaging for injectable medicines, has officially opened its newest plant in the city of Jagodina, Serbia. The facility has positioned itself as the largest manufacturer of glass ampoules in Europe, with the capacity to serve much of the continent's needs, BalkanEngineer.com has learned from the company's official announcement.

The investment, valued at tens of millions of euros, was completed in less than 18 months. Construction began in December 2023 and by the end of 2025 the plant will provide around 180 new jobs in the region.

The new facility will produce Type I borosilicate glass ampoules used to store injectable medicines such as analgesics, anti-inflammatories and anaesthetics. The plant has state-of-the-art automated production and inspection lines to ensure high quality and compliance with pharmaceutical manufacturing standards (cGMP).

According to Andreas Rijs, CEO of Schott Pharma, the strategic investment aims to strengthen supply chains in Europe and offset the impact of rising global tariffs. While other European manufacturers are downsizing their operations, the company is betting on regional production and local staff.

Denis Nikitin, director of the Jagodina plant, stressed that the team of Serbian specialists will work closely with the company's international teams to ensure reliable, high-quality and timely delivery of products to customers.

Ampoules produced in Jagodina will include over 1,000 different items, including clear and amber glass variants, different shapes (B, C, D), and a variety of opening systems. The products have been designed to reduce downtime on production lines and reduce waste, thus optimising production costs for pharmaceutical companies.

With the new plant, Schott Pharma strengthens its presence in Europe and adds Jagodina to its network of 17 production sites in 15 countries worldwide. The company already manufactures ampoules in 10 different locations with the capacity to provide billions of injections annually to the global pharmaceutical industry.
