The official opening of the Muriz tunnel, which will connect Tirana and Dibar, is to take place in Albania

06 march 2025

On 14 March this year. Albania will officially inaugurate the Muriz tunnel, part of the Arbri road, on March 14, a significant milestone in the country's infrastructure development, AlbanianDailyNews.com reported. The 3.7 km long tunnel will reduce travel time between Tirana and Dibar to two hours, significantly improving connectivity and safety for residents of northeastern Albania.

The Muriz tunnel project began in 2018 with the signing of a concession contract, but has encountered serious difficulties. Technological and geological challenges, landslides and bureaucratic barriers prolonged construction for years. Despite these hurdles, the tunnel is complete and will provide a much-needed link between Tirana and the northeast region.

The Arbri road, on which the tunnel is located, is a strategic highway linking the capital with the north-eastern regions of the country. The project also includes other key infrastructure elements such as bridges and tunnels, and the cost of the concession for its construction is Lek 40.3 billion (13 093 340.00 EUR).

The complete construction of the Arbri road and the completion of the Muriz tunnel will have a significant economic impact on the region. Faster access to Tirana will allow north-eastern Albania to develop more strongly economically, while boosting the tourism and industrial sectors. The regions around Dibar will benefit from new investment and trade opportunities.
