North Macedonia`s energy company Elektrani na Severna Makedonija (ESM) has signed an agreement for EUR 2.4 million with Germany`s KfW Development Bank, BalkanEngineer.com learned from BalkanGreenEnergyNews.com. The amount will be invested in research and documentation related to renewable energy projects with an estimated annual capacity of 650 GWh.

The deal paves the way for a state-controlled energy company in North Macedonia to draw a EUR 80.5 milion in loan for projects, North Macedonia`s Prime Minister Zoran Zaev said.

According to Zaev, Germany's support is crucial for accelerating the energy transition, replacing coal with natural gas and reducing carbon emissions, in line with North Macedonia's Energy Development Strategy till 2040.

For the past 20 years, Germany has funded development projects in North Macedonia worth more than EUR 500 million. More than half of the funds have been allocated to the energy sector, the Macedonian prime minister added.
