Authorities in North Macedonia are finalizing a package of legislative changes to create conditions for large-scale foreign investment in the construction of data centers, BalkanEngineer.com learned from the Macedonian Information Agency (MIA). The amendments cover the Urban Planning Act and the Construction Act, with their main goal being to regulate and facilitate the construction of modern digital infrastructure. According to economic estimates by the government in Skopje, the new regulations are expected to attract hundreds of millions of euros to the technology sector, driving growth in gross domestic product and creating new jobs.

The strategy calls for the entire process of land consolidation and project approval to be fully centralized at the government level. This will give potential international investors direct access to ready-to-use, urbanized sites with developed infrastructure, thereby shortening the administrative timelines for launching projects. The goal is for the country to establish a strong position as a regional data processing hub aligned with global technological trends.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport Aleksandar Nikolovski linked legislative reform to the accelerated transition to artificial intelligence-based technologies, which require enormous computing power. According to him, implementing state policy in this sector is a prerequisite for the modernization of the Macedonian economy. The final texts of the two laws are expected to be submitted for a vote in parliament immediately after the conclusion of the coordination procedures between the relevant ministries.
