The construction of the gas interconnector between North Macedonia and Serbia is nearing completion, BalkanEngineer.com has learned from the Macedonian agency MIA. The ministers responsible for the project in both countries – Sanya Bojinovska (North Macedonia) and Dubravka Jedovic Handanovic (Serbia) – held a working meeting in Belgrade in mid-December 2025 to discuss the progress of the project.

The interconnector has a total length of about 67 km and will connect the gas transmission systems of the two countries, with 23 km of the route in North Macedonia and 44 km in Serbia. The project is considered very important for improving regional energy security and diversifying gas supplies to the Western Balkans.
During the meeting, Ministers Sanya Bojinovska and Dubravka Jedovic Handanovic discussed the technical, financial, and institutional steps for the implementation of the project. According to MIA, the World Bank and other international commercial banks have expressed interest in financing the project.
Construction is expected to be completed in 2027, with the first gas deliveries in 2028. The interconnector will be designed to allow for the transmission of hydrogen in the future, in line with European climate and energy policies.
The ministers confirmed their commitment to enhanced coordination and adherence to the agreed deadlines, emphasizing the importance of the project not only for the two countries but also for broader regional and European energy connectivity.
