German chain Lidl receives support from Albanian government for major investment in logistics centre

01 july 2025

German supermarket chain Lidl will enter the Albanian market with a new logistics centre. The company has already received strategic investor status from the government in Tirana, enabling it to implement its plans more easily and with support from the state. The decision is part of Albania's broader strategy to attract foreign investment, BalkanEngineer.com has learned from an official announcement by the Albanian Investment Development Agency (AIDA) on social media.

The company confirmed the news through an official statement and described the status as an important step towards fleshing out its plans in Albania. Lidl did not disclose specific details of its projects, but according to local media, the investment amounts to around EUR 105 million. The centre will be built in Porto Romano bay, an area that is planned for development as a cargo area for the port of Durres.

With this status, Lidl will be able to benefit from various concessions - such as access to state land at lower prices and faster administrative procedures. The aim is to speed up the company's entry and implementation of its projects in the country.

As early as 2022, Lidl established a local division in Albania that focuses on real estate acquisitions. The German retailer's presence in the country is expected to bring benefits to the local economy, from new jobs to opportunities for Albanian manufacturers and suppliers. And for the government, it is another step towards attracting large international companies and boosting confidence in the country's business climate.
