Albania will upgrade its railway infrastructure with support from the European Union (EU): 90.5 million euro in funding will be directed towards the reconstruction of the 34-kilometre section between the port of Durres and the town of Rogozina, part of Pan-European Transport Corridor VIII linking Italy with Bulgaria. This is what BalkanEngineer.com learned from the official website of the EU in Albania.

The funds include a 60.5 million euro grant from the EU under the Western Balkans Investment Framework (WBIF) and a 30 million euro loan from the European Investment Bank (EIB Global). The project is part of the first stage of the overall modernisation of a 136-kilometre line reaching the border with North Macedonia, from where it will continue to Bulgaria.
The route is crucial for regional connectivity and, according to EC and EIB officials, for military mobility in South-East Europe. The reconstruction is expected to improve freight and passenger traffic, reduce travel times and open up new economic opportunities.
Albania's Prime Minister Edi Rama said it was the start of the country's “railway renaissance” and Brussels stressed the importance of Corridor VIII for the integration of the Western Balkans into the EU transport network.
The project is estimated to cost more than 121 million euro. Additional co-financing is expected from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development.
