Bulgaria tops the EU rankings for gold medals per capita at science olympiads

Bulgaria officially ranks first among all European Union member states in the number of gold medals won per capita at international science Olympiads. This exceptional achievement and a review of the historic successes of Bulgaria’s talented students were presented during the traditional “Olympic Breakfast,” which brought together national team leaders, Olympians, and partners, as reported by BalkanEngineer.com based on a publication by Manager.bg.

The data on the performance of Bulgarian students demonstrates unquestionable world-class excellence. In the past year alone, these young talents have won a total of 39 medals at the most prestigious global competitions, including 8 gold medals. Bulgaria’s national computer science team ranked fourth in the world; in linguistics, the country took first and second place globally; and young Bulgarian astronomers and astrophysicists won three gold medals. When the results from other European, Balkan, and youth competitions are added, the total tally for the year amounts to an impressive 97 medals—15 gold, 40 silver, and 42 bronze.

Bulgaria also plays a pioneering role on a global scale, having initiated and founded three international Olympiads—in computer science, linguistics, and the most recent: the International Artificial Intelligence Olympiad (which has become the fastest-growing scientific competition in the world, with over 100 participating countries). The Association of Natural Science Olympiad Teams (SOOPN) emphasized that these successes are the result of the tremendous effort put in by the young people.
