Bulgaria recorded the second highest annual growth in construction output among European Union (EU) countries in March 2025, BalkanEngineer.com has learned from data released by the European statistical office Eurostat. Compared to the same month of the previous year, the country's sector grew by an impressive 8.8%, second only to the Czech Republic (12.7%) and ahead of Austria (7.4%).

On a month-on-month basis compared to February, construction in Bulgaria is also growing steadily at 1.8%, ranking the country fifth in the EU on this indicator. This is against a minimal overall increase of 0.1% across the Union, with some countries such as Portugal, Slovenia and Poland reporting significant declines.
According to Eurostat, the growth in construction is mainly due to the intensification in the building construction segment, as well as in urban construction, which saw an increase of 2.8% in the EU and 4.1% in the euro area on a monthly basis. However, on an annual basis, the sector remains under pressure, with total construction output falling by 0.7% in the EU and by 1.1% in the euro area.
Bulgaria's performance is impressive against the backdrop of the general decline in construction in the EU and the euro area, which suggests the presence of domestic factors supporting the sector - such as accelerated absorption of EU funds, increased interest in industrial construction and infrastructure projects. Analysts note that such a positive trend could become a driver for related industries such as construction materials extraction, logistics and mechanical engineering.
