Austrian Strabag expands its Eastern European footprint with the acquisition of Romanian railway company Bawi Construction

The Austrian technology and construction group Strabag SE has signed an agreement to acquire 100% of the shares in the Romanian railway contractor BAWI Construction SRL, BalkanEngineer.com learned from a publication by Romania Insider. The deal aims to significantly expand the Austrian giant’s market presence in the rapidly developing railway infrastructure sector in Romania and Southeast Europe. The transaction is expected to be officially finalized in the second half of 2026, following approval from the relevant regulatory authorities.

The Bucharest-based company BAWI Construction is an established provider in the railway sector with a comprehensive portfolio of services — ranging from track construction and modernization to specialized engineering activities and in-house production of railway components. The company employs approximately 240 people, and its revenue for 2025 is estimated at approximately 60 million euros. Through this acquisition, Strabag will integrate into its structure not only qualified personnel but also a specialized fleet of machinery, which will increase its in-house production capacity along the supply chain.

The Romanian railway infrastructure market has become a key target for international investors thanks to large-scale national and European funding programs aimed at modernizing the region’s transportation network. Peter Glöckler, a member of the Executive Board of Strabag SE, commented that the company sees enormous future potential in Romania. He emphasized that bringing BAWI on board — a company with high technical expertise and a strong market presence — is a strategic move to strengthen the group’s market share in one of Europe’s most important emerging markets.
