Albania to revitalise its military industry with new centre for production of equipment and military uniforms

A former industrial complex in Tirana, Albania, will be transformed into a state-of-the-art facility for the production of military equipment and uniforms. BalkanEngineer.com has learned this from an official announcement by Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama. He stressed that the project is part of a long-term strategy to rebuild the national defence industry and commission unused production capacities.

According to the information released, the new centre will be located on the site of a former tractor and agricultural machinery factory that has not been operational for decades. Rama dismissed claims that the facility could pose a safety risk to the surrounding areas, assuring that all safety and environmental standards would be met. "This is not an explosives plant, but a state-of-the-art centre for the production of military vehicles, uniforms and equipment for the army, police and fire services," the prime minister said.

The initiative also involves the Albanian state company KAYO, as well as the private company Timak, which already exports ambulances and fire trucks to foreign markets.

The project is part of a broader national programme of economic transformation through the revival of strategic sectors. Defence Minister Piro Wengu stressed that investment in the defence sector has increased tenfold in the last decade and the new facility will play a strategic role in this direction.
