16 january 2025

Albania is renewing the tender for the construction of a new port in Drach (Duras), estimated at 400 million euro, BalkanEngineer.com has learned from SeeNews.com. The Dras Port Authority (DPA), which manages the country's largest port, has announced the reopening of the tender for the first phase of construction of a port in the area of Porto Romano, located northwest of the current facility. All cargo handling operations will be relocated there.

According to DPA, the budget for the first phase amounts to 39.3 billion lei (nearly 400 million euros) and the project should be completed in 40 months. The deadline for submitting bids is 7 February 2025.

The original tender, announced in July 2024, was cancelled due to a lack of suitable proposals. The new port will be connected by road and rail and will serve as a logistics base for dry port facilities in Pristina (Kosovo) and Struga (North Macedonia). Funding for the project will be fully provided by the Albanian government, confirmed Prime Minister Edi Rama.

Following the relocation of cargo handling activities, the current port in the south of Drach will be transformed into a large-scale housing and maritime complex at a cost of €2 billion. The project will be implemented by the United Arab Emirates-based real estate company Emaar, known for its international luxury projects.
