25 june 2025

Albania's parliamentary finance committee has approved the Finance Ministry's proposal to allocate Lek 1 billion (about 10 millione euro) to support artificial intelligence start-up company Thinking Machines Lab, BalkanEngineer.com has learned from Albanian media. The company was founded by Mira Murati, former chief technology officer of OpenAI and one of the lead engineers behind ChatGPT.

The company is based in San Francisco and has the ambition to develop advanced AI systems that integrate text, images and video, aiming to create more comprehensible, customizable and efficient models than already existing technologies, including ChatGPT.

Albania's Finance Minister Petrit Malay announced that the funds will be provided by proceeds from confiscated property. He said the investment aims to make Albania an active player on the global technology map and a regional hub for research and development in artificial intelligence. Prime Minister Edi Rama personally participated in the talks with Murati and stressed the strategic importance of the project for Albania. The initiative is expected to attract foreign investors and accelerate technological development in the country.

Thinking Machines Lab plans to raise up to 2 billion dollars in an initial investment round, aiming for a valuation of at least 10 billion dollars - a scale that would put it among the world's most ambitious AI startups, though the company doesn't yet have a finished product on the market.
