In recent years sustainability has been acquiring a new and grander importance. For a lot of companies in different sectors, ecology continues to change from a “moral position” to a “structural factor”, which determines competitiveness, access to markets and even the direction of capital flows. During 2025, investors are already reading ESG reports, retail chains are introducing their own standards, and consumers are looking for transparency in every part of the product, including elements that previously seemed secondary. One such element is the label – the small patch on the package, which contains information, identity and tracking. “Sustainability now dictates business decisions - from the materials we choose, to the product’s journey across the market. For this reason, we focus more attention on the paper, the foil, and the glue for labels, so they can work without problems in every part of the recycling process”, Weber Etiketten commented to BalkanEngineer.com.

When examining classic labels under a microscope, the problems begin with the glue layer. In conventional solutions, glue can remain on the surface during washing and leave behind impurities, and the foils sometimes fall in the wrong flow of recycling. For example, a PET bottle with a problematic label loses a significant part of its value during processing, a glass jar with foil residues requires additional energy and sorting, and cardboard packaging covered with a difficult-to-separate material is often excluded from high-quality recycling options.

And here the business meets a dilemma: technological compromise or strategic formation. “In a large part of the industry, something very interesting is happening. Sustainable labels have begun having a direct effect on business results. We are talking about fewer losses in recycling streams, fewer operating costs and easier passage through audits by retail chains," Weber Etiketten pointed out.
