During cleaning, grinding and polishing of metal surfaces the choice of abrasive instrument is a deciding factor in the quality of the finished product. Flap wheels are utilized there, where a combination of uniform material removal, adaptation to the shape of the workpiece and controlled processing without excessive heating of the surface, is required. "Flap wheels are a practical solution for operations such as rust removal, edge cleaning, grinding and surface preparation before subsequent processing. They combine the flexibility of the flap construction with high productivity and long service life," BalkanEngineer.com was informed by established company SR Abrasive & Tools, which offers Podim abrasive products.

The flap wheel is utilized on surfaces that need cleaning, smoothing, reforming or otherwise prepared for the next technological step. Unlike hard abrasive tools, their structure allows for better monitoring of the detail’s profile, which is important for cylindrical, conical, profiled and hard-to-reach surfaces. They are mainly used for:

  • Removing rust, oxidized layers and old paint;
  • Cleaning burrs and edges after mechanical processing;
  • Grinding and satin finishing of flat, round and profile surfaces;
  • Preparing surfaces of stainless steel, aluminum and other metals before polishing or coating;
  • Cleaning welding marks and smoothing treated areas.

"Flap wheels are preferred precisely because they allow the performance of several operations in one working stroke," explained SR Abrasive & Tools.

In Podim’s catalogue are several types of flap wheels, designed for different applications and machines. Including flap wheels with a metal central hole, wheels with a concealed hole, flap wheels with a groove, variants with M14 connection, flap wheels with felt filling, pre-profiled wheels and wheels with a tail.
