Cooling is an essential element for the infrastructure of every data center. It has a direct impact on the reliability of the equipment, the level of expenses and opportunity for future expansion. For these reasons, cooling solutions are looked at as a separate, particularly vital engineering system with a defined range and functions. With this in mind, Hoval is developing ServeCool – an innovative system for energy effective cooling, created specifically for the needs of data centers.

"ServeCool is a modular solution with an integrated control system, which allows flexible configuration according to the specific cooling capacity requirements of the center. The system design is based on individual compact modules that function independently and can be combined in different cooling modes, providing high levels of stability, control and operational reliability," Hoval informed BalkanEngineer.com.

Due to its modular nature, the solution provides the opportunity for gradual increase in the capacity of the cooling during subsequent expansion of the infrastructure. In the confines of the system, is integration of all main components, necessary for generating and distributing cooling, as well as processing and determining airflow. The installation area of one module is 11 m², and together with the required space for service and maintenance, the total required area reaches 14 m².

ServeCool combines three main modes for cooling, which ensure effective control of heat load and stable conditions for work of IT infrastructure. They include:

  • Indirect free cooling;
  • Indirect adiabatic cooling;
  • Mechanical cooling at peak loads.

The system automatically selects the optimal work mode depending on climate conditions and the current load of the data center. Thanks to the highly effective heat exchangers and integrated condensation prevention solutions, ServeCool uses the free cooling method as the main mode for most of the year. Mechanical cooling is activated only when needed, significantly reducing energy usage.
